MATCH PREVIEW | Grand Final spot up for grabs this Saturday
With one place remaining in this year's Under-18s Academy Grand Final, Leeds Rhinos and Warrington Wolves meet at Stanningley on Saturday afternoon to decide which side will progress to the season finale, kick off 12pm.
After two rounds of the Top Four Qualifiers, both sides have one win each (both against Castleford) and sit behind Wigan Warriors, who booked their place in the Grand Final with wins over both Leeds and Warrington over the last fortnight. With the Warriors set to take on the Tigers on Wednesday night to confirm them as hosts of this year's finale, Saturday sets up for a straight shootout as to whether it will be the Rhinos or Wolves progressing back into the final - 12 months after the two clubs faced in last year's decider.
Leeds come into the game with a win over Warrington already after two Seth Marchant tries helped the young Rhinos to a 22-6 triumph at Victoria Park earlier in the season. Since then, a mixed set of results has seen Chev Walker's side produce strong comebacks to beat Wakefield in the penultimate game of the regular season as well as the first Qualifier match against the Tigers, but Wigan have proved the thorn in Leeds' side with back-to-back 40-point wins at Robin Park. With the current rankings looking like the Rhinos will be heading back to Lancashire for the finale, they will be looking for a much-improved showing after leaving it late to rally against the Tigers and produce a stronger second half than they had against the Warriors, after putting the home side under plenty of pressure in the first 40 minutes.
Sonny Hetherington remains the side's leading try scorer with 12 in as many appearances this season, and has been formidable alongside Jacob Tooala and wing partners Tom Richardson and Liam Watson. Since returning from injury against Castleford, Watson has three tries in both Qualifier outings. Marchant also remains top of the points scorers list and has been a great partner to Kai Irvine as well as the wider spine of full back Wade White and hooker Jack Mears.
Other than the loss to Leeds in July, Warrington have only been defeated by league leaders Wigan all season long as they have been one of the premier sides in the Academy competition once again.
A much closer 30-20 defeat to the Warriors at the start of August closed the gap to a previous 42-0 drubbing during the regular season, but otherwise, the Wolves have been able to find points in their other matches this campaign. Last time out, they posted 46 points in a hefty win over Castleford to add to 40+ point wins against Hull, Huddersfield, Bradford, Hull KR and Castleford from the regular season. Eight different try scorers crossed against the Tigers, but they will be expecting a closer affair when they travel to Leeds on Saturday. It will be the side's first Academy meeting in Leeds since the Rhinos took victory in a 23-12 win during the semi finals of the 2022 competition; subsequently on their way to Grand Final victory.
